It has been another really busy week in the constituency. I have had meetings with scores of constituents regarding a range of issues and concerns and I have also met with numerous local businesses and organisations.
This culminated on Saturday when I visited and officially opened a new community hub in Bedlington, The Lodge, which is based at the main entrance of St Benet Biscop High School. The Lodge will be open to students, families and the local community and will offer a myriad of activities and workshops for the whole community of all ages.

This project took two years of planning and fundraising more than £130,000. I was extremely impressed with the facility and the desire and drive of those involved who are determined to ensure that The Lodge can be enjoyed by the whole community. I congratulate everyone involved and wish them every success in the future.

I listened to Nick Clegg's speech to the Lib Dem party conference and despite his rhetoric the reality is that actions speak louder than words and people will not be fooled by him. He sought votes pledging to fight savage Tory cuts and then joined a Tory-led Government days later and backs cuts that go too far too fast. He has broken a list of promises from tuition fees to the VAT rise.

Successive reports and economic forecasts are deeply concerning for us here in the UK and also the world economy. Surely it is about time that the Chancellor realised we need more people in work to really get the deficits down.

Here in Wansbeck and throughout the UK, families and businesses want to see action now, they want see action to get the economy growing and get people back to work. We need a real plan for jobs and growth in Wansbeck, in Britain and around the world, and we need it quickly.

I spent the best of five hours visiting the Wansbeck General Hospital.

During my visit I had the opportunity to meet and discuss a range of issues with patients, staff, members of the executive management team and representatives of the trades unions at the hospital, which included UNISON and the Royal College of Midwives.

It has been extremely busy in the constituency with a range of meetings with local organisations, businesses and constituents.

The importance of the Rio Tinto Alcan smelter and power station to its employees and their families and to the economy of Wansbeck and South East Northumberland cannot be overestimated.

It is no secret that Rio Tinto are conducting a wide ranging review and considering all the options open to them, and this has caused considerable speculation over its future.
During the last few months I have raised the importance of the smelter and the power station with ministers and on the floor of the House of Commons.

I have also had discussions with both management and the trades unions and they are aware that I will do anything I can to try and secure the future of the smelter and power station.

Ashington Town Council is pleased to announce that the judging of the popular Gardens Competition has now taken place and the winners were announced during an event held at Ashington Leisure Centre on 17th August. Just about everyone who had entered the competition came to the prizegiving and brought either family or friends with them. More than 50 people came along to hear the winners being announced and joined the Mayor of Ashington and members of the Judging Panel afterwards for refreshments. The picture shows the prizewinners with the Mayor, Councillor John McCormack.

I have long argued that the Government's proposals to cut police officers, police staff and police budgets is wrong and will have a detrimental effect on the ability of our police forces to operate effectively and efficiently.

The appalling riots in London and in other parts of the UK have demonstrated the Government needs to urgently rethink the cuts they are implementing. It is worth remembering the proposals will result in 627 fewer police officers in the Northumbria force area and 16,222 fewer across England and Wales.

I was advised this week that prompt action from the Environment Agency and the county council averted some unwelcome avoidable flooding in the heart of Morpeth.

The flooding threat arose due to a blockage in the Cotting Burn culvert that was caused by a 15ft tree that got wedged under the water pipe trapping other debris that naturally floats downstream.

It appears that the limbs of the tree had been deliberately cut and the tree disposed of in the water.

It has been extremely busy in the constituency as I have taken the opportunity to meet with a number of community groups, local authorities, businesses, and individuals.

These have included a meeting with senior officers at Northumberland County Council, when we discussed a range of issues which included proposals for a replacement leisure and community centre in Ashington, and also the Morpeth bypass.

I have also had meetings with representatives of Ashington Town Council to discuss a number of issues relating to the regeneration of the town.

Last Thursday evening I spoke at a very well attended meeting organised by the Northern Public Services Alliance and the Hardest Hit Campaign.

The Northern Public Services Alliance is the trade union campaign to defend public services and campaign for fairer alternatives to savage spending cuts.

Bad Apples North East are a community interest company based in Ashington offering music projects. On Sunday 31st of July we are having an "It's a Knockout" competition and family fun day at the Hirst Welfare Centre from 11am-3pm.

The teams competing are all raising sponsor money to enable Bad Apples North East to work with more young people in the area and offer more workshops.

Staff from Barclays Ashington, Revolution Bar Sunderland and a team of dancers are all competing against other local companies and our three Bad Apples teams made up of supporters and young people stepping up to the challenge.
