Ashington Parish Council was declared a Town Council at the first meeting 15th June 2009 when Ashington was recognised aa a town for the first time. Cllr Pauline Thompson was declared Chair of the Council and consequently became the First Town Mayor of Ashington.
The new Ashington Town Council is the biggest of 8 new Councils in South East Northumberland with 21 Councillors.
