Ian Lavery column: Meetings and visits around Wansbeck

Posted by The Journal on Aug 4, 11 09:52 AM in Wansbeck MP

It has been extremely busy in the constituency as I have taken the opportunity to meet with a number of community groups, local authorities, businesses, and individuals.

These have included a meeting with senior officers at Northumberland County Council, when we discussed a range of issues which included proposals for a replacement leisure and community centre in Ashington, and also the Morpeth bypass.

I have also had meetings with representatives of Ashington Town Council to discuss a number of issues relating to the regeneration of the town.

I recently attended the fun run challenge which was held on Newbiggin Promenade, when scores of young people participated in the event.

I had the great pleasure of starting the fun runs and presenting the participants with their medals and T-shirts.

All credit to Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure's Make-a-Move team who organised the event, and well done to all those young people who took part in the runs.

Last week, I made a further visit to Cleasewell Hill School in Guide Post and it was tremendous to see the children enjoying a range of activities and outdoor games delivered by the Northumberland Play Ranger Service. This is an excellent service delivered by an enthusiastic team of play rangers.

A special mention should also go the volunteers at Watbus Community Transport, who provide an excellent service and had transported the children to the school.

I recently accepted an invitation to visit a women's refuge to meet with staff and residents.

During the visit, I met with persons fleeing the effects of domestic abuse and heard some harrowing accounts of their experiences.

This meeting gave me a greater understanding of the problem and recognition of the excellent and much-needed service that is provided by refuges and their dedicated staff.

Last Thursday I visited the Community Help Hub which is located on Front Street West in Bedlington.

This excellent initiative offers free telephone and internet access to those looking for jobs or applying for benefits. The volunteer staff are also available to provide guidance that may be required to complete forms and applications.

I was extremely impressed with the staff and the services on offer.

At a recent meeting with representatives of SENRUG I was updated on their ongoing campaigns, particularly in relation to the campaign for the introduction of passenger rail services to Bedlington and Ashington via the Ashington, Blyth and Tyne Line. I will do all I can to assist SENRUG on this issue.

We'd like to hear from you.
