Ashington back on form with a win
Ashington bounced back to form last night in the only Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division game which went ahead.
After claiming just one point from the previous nine, the Colliers defeated relegation-threatened Horden CW 4-2 at Welfare Park.
Gary Middleton's side made a dream start, scoring twice in the opening five minutes. In the second minute, recent signing Alex Benjamin struck when he collected a long goal kick from Karl Dryden and produced a clinical finish wide of goalkeeper Craig Shields.
Almost immediately, Horden trailed by two goals. Steven Baptist played in Gareth Bainbridge and he fired in a left-foot shot from six yards.
Benjamin made it three on 28 minutes as he shrugged off a defender and beat Shields for a second time but Horden were given a lifeline when Andrew Shingleton delivered a good effort.
It was only temporary respite, however, and just before the interval a splendid move involving Andrew Johnson and Benjamin opened up the opportunity for Baptist and his crisp left-foot shot flew into the net. Horden played much better in the second half but managed only one goal when Stephen Thomas scored direct from a free kick.
