Environment award for Bothal Middle School
Green activities and a focus on protecting the environment have won a coveted award for youngsters at a Northumberland school.
Pupils at Bothal Middle School Sports College in Ashington have been given a gold award by the Woodland Trust for getting involved in work such as tree planting, cutting carbon emissions and recycling.
The awards scheme launched this year offers schools the opportunity to bring the great outdoors, the world of wildlife and green issues into the classroom, with the help of a range of resources.
The Green Tree Schools Awards reward schools each time they take part in inspirational learning events, projects or initiatives provided by the Woodland Trust.
Youngsters at Bothal Middle have planted new trees in their school grounds, grown trees from seeds, recycled Christmas cards, visited a woodland, reduced their carbon emissions and joined various other Woodland Trust activities.
Headteacher Andy Roberts said: "Our location in a rural setting makes us very aware of green issues.
"The children have planted 500 trees over several years in Plessey Woods and our school grounds. They are very enthusiastic participants in green events''.
The school is part of the Ashington Learning Partnership.
