Voluntary groups warned of tight council budget

Voluntary and community groups in Northumberland have been warned they are facing a reduction in funding for their work - because of the recession and tough budget savings required by the county council.

However, County Hall bosses have reassured the sector that a funding package of ÃÂ£1.3m will still be available next year. Budget proposals recommend more money for charities directly supporting those people worst affected by the recession.

These will include services such as credit unions and the Citizens' Advice Bureau.

There will also be continued support for community hubs such as development trusts and social welfares, and there is a proposal to double the Community Chest fund - used by area committees to support valued local activities - to ÃÂ£300,000.

Liberal Democrat lead member for the sector, Neil Bradbury, said: "Next year's spend won't be as generous as this year, and that's been inevitable in the current financial climate.

"Voluntary and community organisations do a power of good work across Northumberland, and this spending review means that we can squeeze the most out of what's available."

The proposals will go to the executive in January. People and organisations will be able to comment at area committee meetings this month and in January.
