Woodhorn bosses delighted at rise in visitors
Bosses at a Northumberland visitor attraction have spoken of their delight after the busiest September and October period since it opened.
Visitor numbers at the Woodhorn Museum and Archives Centre near Ashington in September were an amazing 71% up on last year, with October showing a 32% rise.
The year to the end of October was almost 17% up on the same period in 2008.
Director Keith Merrin said: "We would normally expect our visitor numbers to drop away quite dramatically after the schools return at the beginning of September.
"But this year they have surprised us. With better weather this year compared to last, the 17% increase on the August figure wasn't too much of a surprise, but September was."
Mr Merrin said the popular Northumberland at War exhibition (pictured) currently running at Woodhorn had helped attract more people in. The exhibition ends on November 22.
He said the success of the award-winning play Pitmen Painters, which is based on the story of the Ashington Group of Artists whose work is on permanent display at the museum, had also been instrumental in the visitor numbers.
