Jack Charlton gets his flu vaccine at the Ponteland Road medical centre in NewcastleFormer World Cup winner Jack Charlton touched base on Tyneside to get his seasonal flu jab yesterday.

Ashington-born Jack, who was part of England's 1966 World Cup winning team, popped in to the Ponteland Road medical centre in Newcastle to urge eligible people to get their vaccine.

The 74-year-old former football star is helping to promote the Department of Health's drive to encourage people to get their jab and keep themselves well this winter.

Last night Jack, who went on to manage the Republic of Ireland after winning the World Cup with England, said: "Years ago I remember going to Darras Hall and getting my jab - since then I've had the jab every year and never had the flu.

"I can't be scared of needles because I was in the army and we used to queue to get injections and the needles were blunt. It made you jump a bit."

Everyone aged 65 and over is routinely offered the jab, as are younger people with long-term conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, serious kidney and liver disease.

We'd like to hear from you.
