Ashington non-drinking zones could be extended

Posted by The Journal on Oct 19, 09 02:00 PM in News

No-drinking zones covering parts of a former pit town could be extended in a new bid to deter anti-social behaviour and underage drinking among youngsters.

Northumbria Police is considering extending the two existing zones in Ashington where drinking alcohol in public is banned and where officers can confiscate drinks from troublemakers.

The controls currently cover the town centre and Hirst Park, but police chiefs are looking into a ban extending across the whole town.

Members of Ashington Town Council have given their backing to the move, and further discussions will now take place with the county council and Wansbeck MP Denis Murphy.

We'd like to hear from you.
