Lee Matthewson of AmbleA teenager has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Northumberland man.

Shane Gray, 19, of Winchester Road, Ashington, appeared before South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court over the death of Lee Matthewson, pictured.

Mr Matthewson suffered a fatal stab wound to his chest following a fight at a ground-floor flat in Ashington earlier this year.

He had attended the property in Bolam Road, on June 21, when the altercation broke out and he was injured with a knife which pierced his heart.

The 21-year-old, of Middleton Street, Amble, then staggered outside into the street but collapsed.

Emergency services were called to the address following reports of the row during the early hours of the morning.

Mr Matthewson was taken to Wansbeck District Hospital, but he was pronounced dead at around 5.45am.

A Home Office pathologist report concluded he died from a single stab wound to the chest and had also suffered a number of minor facial injuries.

At the time of his death, a handful of floral tributes were laid outside the property. One said: "To Moochy . You were a great lad."

Police initially arrested three men in connection with the attack, and charged Gray yesterday morning.

Sitting in the dock, Gray spoke only to confirm his name, age and address at the hearing where he was flanked by security staff.

Magistrates at South East Northumberland Law Court refused to grant bail and instead remanded Gray in custody.

He will now appear before Newcastle's Crown Court on October 13.
