Minister to visit new Ashington factory venture

A new business venture will be launched today at a Northumberland factory which provides vital employment for disabled people.

Jonathan Shaw, the Minister for Disabled People, and Wansbeck MP Denis Murphy will visit Remploy's manufacturing plant on Ashington's Jubilee Trading Estate to give their support to the initiative.

Working with colleagues at the company's factories in Birkenhead, Newcastle, Swansea and Wrexham, Remploy Commercial Furniture at Ashington is a new business which aims to build on the company's expertise in making high- quality office and accommodation furniture and beds.

In the last three years, Remploy has supplied educational furniture to more than 13,000 schools and colleges.

Remploy Ashington employs 35 disabled people, all of whom are skilled in engineering and manufacturing processes.

Factory manager David Goodings said: "While we are in a difficult economic climate, Remploy Commercial Furniture is taking a focused approach and targeting its resources and skills at a defined market.

"I am very pleased that Jonathan Shaw and our local MP Denis Murphy are lending us their support and encouragement.''

Local business leaders have also been invited to today's event so that they can see at first hand the skills and resources available at Remploy.

Remploy was started in 1947 to provide work for soldiers left disabled by injuries sustained in the Second World War.

We'd like to hear from you.

But never a mention of the thousands of disabled workers who were condemned to a life on benefits when Remploy (backed by the Plastic Labvour Party) closed 28 factories in 2008!
