Jack Charlton was unaware of collapse
Former World cup winner Jack Charlton has said he was unaware he had collapsed on holiday until he woke up in a Spanish hospital.
The 74-year-old from Ashington was making a cup of tea when, he says, suddenly the room began swimming and he collapsed into unconsciousness.
Mr Charlton had been making a cup of tea for his wife and himself at the Costa Blanca resort Mascarat, in Spain, when the dizziness overcame him.
The first thing he knew about his ordeal was when he awoke in a Benidorm private clinic.
The grandfather-of-five said: "It was a bit of a shock, but I'm fine now. When I first arrived I was making some tea for me and the wife to have in bed when I felt it in my eyes.
"I looked in the mirror and I was going round and round.
"I lay on the bed and when I woke up I was in hospital.
"Everything went fine after that. The doctors checked me out for everything. My head, my heart, but I'm fine, I'm out.
"We went out with the family last night for a meal and had a few drinks, not too many, just a couple, and it was fine.
I'm generally doing what I'd normally be doing on holiday, sitting in the sun, swimming, playing with the grandchildren.
"It was a bit of a shock to me and everyone but it's over now."
Son John added he was sure Big Jack was back on form when he started teasing the grandchildren.
"He's definitely back to himself if he's teasing them," he said.
"He's been playing with the baby and laughing so we're all sure he's fine.
"We've been out for drinks and a walk around the marina here. We've had a BBQ, and everything is great."
Mr Charlton has undergone a number of tests to find out what the cause was.
