Charges dropped against Ashington man

Posted by The Journal on Jul 23, 09 04:24 PM in News

A man arrested after the death of a 21-year drug user has been cleared of supplying the heroin substitute methadone.

Philip Murray was questioned by police following the death of Alexander Tams in March last year.

The 45-year-old, of Sycamore Street, Ashington, Northumberland, had denied supplying a Class A drug and was due to stand trial this week at Newcastle Crown Court.

But he walked free from court yesterday after the case against him was dropped.

Offering no evidence against Murray, prosecutor Tim Gittins said that having reviewed the case it was felt it was not in the public interest to proceed against him.

Mr Tams was taken to Wansbeck District Hospital in Ashington after a 999 call from an address in the town's Cheshire Close, but later pronounced dead.

We'd like to hear from you.
