United laying the Foundation for coaching success in Ashington

Posted by The Journal on Jun 27, 09 01:01 PM in Schools

Newcastle United Foundation has teamed up with Ashington High School Sports College to provide sixth-form pupils with essential work experience.

As part of a new initiative to develop the football coaches of the future, six A-level students at the High School are being given a unique opportunity to work alongside senior coaching staff at the Foundation.

The six students, all keen to carve a career in football or sports development, will each undertake 15 hours of work experience on the Foundation's weekly and holiday coaching programmes within Northumberland.

In addition, they will also attend weekly coaches meetings at Newcastle United's training ground.

Marc Nash, Post 16 Football Development Tutor at Ashington High School, said: "Newcastle United Foundation has provided a fantastic opportunity for our young people to shadow a team of experienced football coaches working in grassroots football.

"They will gain practical work experience which they can include on their CV and take to potential employers."

Foundation football development manager Rob Atkin said: "This initiative is part of the Foundation's drive to use the local passion for football to inspire young people to learn.

"As the Foundation's coaching programmes and projects expand into Northumberland, it is essential we invest in the high quality and committed coaches of the future."

We'd like to hear from you.
