Artwork memorial to Seaton Hirst school
A school which is closing in a ã48m education shake-up will be commemorated by a piece of artwork which was unveiled yesterday.
The 8ft stainless steel sculpture, which resembles a plant seed head with eight pods holding time capsules containing memorabilia, will be a memorial to Seaton Hirst Middle School, Ashington.
It is one of 10 schools which will close over the next two years as part of the creation of the all-age Hirst Academy, which will be based at five separate sites in Ashington, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Lynemouth and open in September.
Yesterday current and former Seaton Hirst pupils and staff gathered for the unveiling of the sculpture, the brainchild of Northumberland College art and design student Samantha Frew, 18. She contacted the school and asked if it was interested in working with her on the project.
The artwork has been built by lecturer David Mole from the college's engineering department, a former Seaton Hirst Middle pupil. Patrick O'Doherty, head of art, design and multimedia at Northumberland College, said: "This is a nice project to be involved in.''
