Michael OliverHe may be the UK's youngest professional referee, but Michael Oliver has not forgotten his Northumberland roots.

When not officiating in top matches, Michael is manager of the pub team at the Block and Tackle in his home town of Ashington.

He said: "I always wanted to be a referee ever since watching my dad refereeing when I was younger. Despite all the travelling involved with the job, I still feel very much at home in Ashington, having a kick-about with the lads from the pub.

"I don't think I will ever get tired of that, no matter where my future takes me."

The 24 year-old began taking matches in the Morpeth Sunday League at the age of 16 and progressed to the Championship in short time.

He took charge of the 2007 Conference play-off final at Wembley and has also officiated in a Carling Cup match at Liverpool.

Refereeing runs in the family for Michael, whose dad Clive is also a Football League referee.

Scott Hughes, manager of the Block and Tackle, said: "We all see him as being a local lad still. He is very good at what he does, but never brags about his achievements.

"I know his dad is very proud of him and the whole town is behind him in his bid to become a Premiership referee."
