Ashington ready to challenge for cup

Posted by The Journal on May 12, 09 08:45 AM in Sport

Ashington chairman Ian LaveryAshington chairman Ian Lavery insists the Colliers are not going to St James's Park tonight simply to make the numbers up, but to win the Northumberland FA Senior Cup.

He said: "It should be a tremendous evening and although we are underdogs against Newcastle United Reserves, if we can get a good crowd behind us, then we could bring the cup home to Woodhorn Lane."

Caretaker manager David Brown cannot call upon injured goalkeeper Paul Simpson or the unavailable Gary Cook. Simpson was stretchered off in the last game against Whitley Bay and has undergone an operation to repair a torn and ruptured Achilles.

Kyle Hayes will be in goal for the final and Brown will need to give fitness tests to striker Lee Scott and midfielder Stephen Hutchinson.

"Tonight is a one-off experience for the club and the players," said Brown. "I'll simply say to them: 'Go out and enjoy yourselves and don't let Ashington down'."

Kick-off is at 7pm and the East Stand will be open from 6pm. Admission is £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
