Sixth form students at an Ashington school have been given an insight into the world of business, thanks to a link-up with one of the county's biggest employers.

The students from Hirst High School received a masterclass in human resources work in an event organised by Lynemouth-based Rio Tinto Alcan and the Wansbeck Enterprise Education Network.

The aim of the session was to provide the students, who are studying A-Level Applied Business, with a real-life insight into HR in a genuine business setting.

It saw 15 students taking part in a range of practical activities which focused on recruitment and selection, team building, managing people and learning and development.

Rio Tinto's learning and development officer Clare Lowrie said: "We were delighted to lend our support.

"Business and industry has an individual and collective responsibility to help young people because it's important for all our futures that they fully aware of the employment opportunities which are available to them at the companies on their doorstep."

Andy Gaskell, learning co-ordinator at the Wansbeck Enterprise Education Network, said: "The success of the session was based on one of the region's largest employers passing on their considerable expertise to our young people.

"The students were a credit to Hirst High School. Their response was tremendous and they were extremely enterprising in their attitude throughout the session."

We'd like to hear from you.
