Memories of Seaton Hirst school will not be lost
A school which is closing this summer as part of a ã48m education shake-up in Northumberland is to be remembered by a special piece of artwork.
A commemorative sculpture is to be created as a permanent memorial for Seaton Hirst Middle School in Ashington, which will close in July under plans for an all-age academy in the town.
Headteacher Andy Oglethorpe, colleagues and governors wanted to celebrate the school's history with past and present pupils at a special event this summer.
Now the Ashington-based Northumberland College is working with the school to design and create a stainless steel artwork, with time capsules containing memorabilia from pupils over the years.
The 8ft high sculpture, based on the shape of a plant seed head with eight pods holding the time capsules, is being built by former Seaton Hirst pupil David Mole, a lecturer in the college's engineering department.
It will be unveiled at a celebration day in June which past and present students and staff will attend.
We'd like to hear from you. Send your stories, pics and videos to northumberland@ncjmedia.co.uk
