Leading musicians at Ashington Jazz Club
Jazz enthusiasts have a chance to see some of the country's leading musicians playing in Ashington.
The Virtuoso Jazz Trio features George MacDonald, James Birkett and Peter Stuart, and has been invited to play at Ashington Jazz Club. George MacDonald spent his youth playing saxophone and clarinet in clubs with dance bands in his native Nova Scotia.
Studying at the Royal College of Music, he then joined the Northern Sinfonia as principal clarinet.
James Birkett in one of this country's most acclaimed guitarists. He is director of jazz studies a Newcastle College, has a Doctorate in music and has had two books on jazz guitar published.
Peter Stuart, being the North's leading jazz bass player, is always in demand when a rhythm section is needed to back the best American musicians. He has lived and worked in South Africa, Switzerland and Holland.
Enthusiastic audiences have spread the word and they have played at a variety of concert and festival engagements with requests for music from Bach to Charlie Parker, with a special emphasis on the 'chamber jazz' of the Benny Goodman small groups
They will perform at The Elephant pub, Newbiggin Road, Ashington, on May 6. The concert starts at 8.30pm For further information contact John Taylor (01670) 813983 ordene21@live.co.uk
