Ashington pull off shock to reach cup final
Ashington upset the form book last night when they defeated UniBond League Division One North promotion hopefuls Newcastle Blue Star to reach the final of the Northumberland FA Senior Cup.
It is a competition which Blue Star desperately wanted to win, but it's the Colliers who will line up against either Newcastle United Reserves or Newcastle Benfield at St James's Park.
There was not much between the sides in the opening half-hour before Ashington shocked their high-ranking opponents by taking the lead.
Lee McAndrew played the ball across to Stephen Hutchinson and, after beating a defender, he shot wide of goalkeeper Jack Norton.
Inspired by the success, the hosts took the game to Blue Star who conceded a second goal on the hour. Scott Blandford picked up a clearance before moving forward and firing past Norton.
Blue Star were given a lifeline five minutes from time as Justin Milligan scored an own goal.
Ashington, though, held on for a memorable victory leaving Blue Star to concentrate on claiming a play-off place in the UBL.
