Ashington CC hoping to welcome back star players

Posted by The Journal on Apr 24, 09 11:55 AM in Sport

Ashington hope to be strengthened by the return of Neil Wood and Michael Thewlis as they look for their first win of the season tomorrow.

Batsman Wood and all-rounder Thewlis missed the Colliers' opening-day defeat against Shotley Bridge with calf and back problems respectively.

Tomorrow, however, the pair could be back in action as Ashington entertain newly-promoted Percy Main, who beat Ryton last weekend.

Ashington secretary Dale Ross said: "Neil and Michael were both in the nets earlier in the week, and we are hopeful they will be ready to play tomorrow.

"We lost quite a tight game against Shotley Bridge last weekend - we bowled and fielded pretty well, but Bridge put on about 30 for the last wicket and that ended up making the difference in the end.

"If we bowl the same way tomorrow and put on a few more runs, we should be OK."

Ashington finished fourth-bottom last season and are hoping for a better campaign this time.

Ross added: "We started quite well but, like everyone else, we lost a lot of games to the weather and that seemed to dent people's enthusiasm.

"Hopefully, that was a one-off rainy season - and this year we will have better luck with the weather and finish higher up the table."

We'd like to hear from you.
