Shop worker injured in Ashington attack

Posted by The Journal on Mar 18, 09 09:52 AM in News

A shop assistant was injured when missiles were thrown through a window.

Glass rained down on the woman following the incident last week and paramedics were called to the scene to treat the worker for a gash to the head.

Now police are appealing for information after the attack on the Sure Start building, which is located on Alexandra Road, Ashington, at around 7.30pm last Monday.

Investigators say two stones were thrown at the window causing it to shatter and injure the member of staff who had been working in the room at the time.

This member of staff received a cut to her head which required medical treatment. And last night officers issued a warning to those causing criminal damage, saying they take incidents of this nature very seriously. They also appealed for witnesses to the attack.

Ashington Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Yeats, said: "We are investigating a complaint of criminal damage where a window was broken and unfortunately a staff member was injured.

"We take this type of offence seriously and I would like to point out how such a reckless act not only causes unnecessary damage but can cause serious injuries to others.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area that evening or saw anything to get in touch."

Anyone with any information is asked to call the neighbourhood policing team at Ashington on 0345 604-3043 or the independent Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111.

We'd like to hear from you.
