Ashington crime crackdown continues

Posted by The Journal on Feb 26, 09 09:28 AM in News

Police have arrested 22 people in a week as part of an ongoing crackdown on crime in Northumberland.

Officers carried out a series of raids in Blyth and Ashington as part of Operation Conquest.

This is the latest in a series of operations in a six-month campaign to drive down crime in Northumberland.

Drink-related violence, criminal damage, diesel and metal theft, acquisitive crime and car crime are all under the spotlight as Northumberland Area Command looks to reduce the number of offences.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Coulson said: "We launched this campaign last year because we recognised that certain crimes were increasing. This was not just a problem for Northumberland but was also a national trend.

"We worked closely with our partners at the local authority to raise public awareness, improve crime prevention and target the small number of people who were responsible for the vast majority of crime. This is having a significant impact in reducing crime.

"We have focussed on crimes involving drugs, theft, burglaries, breaking into cars and violent offences through operations such as Operation Conquest in which another 22 people were arrested last week.

"The public also have a part to play in helping us create a safer Northumberland. If they know of people who are involved in any crime they can contact us on 03456 043 043."

We'd like to hear from you.
