Northumberland College plans take shape
Plans for a multi-million-pound college are taking shape.
Planning permission was granted at the end of 2008 for a new ã50m campus which aims to kick-start the regeneration of Ashington town centre.
Wansbeck councillors have thrown their support behind proposals for the former Ashington Hospital site, which is just yards from the shopping centre, to become the new location for Northumberland College.
Foundation work will start on the building later this year and it is hoped students and staff will be able to move into the facility in 2011.
Rachel Ellis-Jones, college principal, said: "Northumberland College is synonymous with Ashington, home of its main campus for more than 50 years.
"We are proposing a new, world-class building in the heart of Ashington for the next 50 years which will kick-start the town centre's regeneration and provide our students with the best facilities they could imagine."
The new-build project is being led by Durham-based construction project managers Lambert Property Solutions, which managed the development of New College Durham's new campus, which opened in 2005.
Project architect Bruce Riches, from Ryder Architecture, has a special interest in the new-build project.
He said: "I was born and bred in Ashington and still have family who live here.
"I want to design a stunning campus which the whole town can be proud of, which will stimulate further regeneration activity.
"Our initial designs envisage a concept whereby the heart of the campus recreates a covered street, showcasing in the shop window the college's wide training offer.
"We are also looking at a series of smaller, interconnected buildings rather than one large building as at present."
The project will be largely funded by the Learning and Skills Council.

Good news that a new College will be built in Ashington. I only hope that adequate parking is provided within the College to accomodate all staff and students.
Ashington already has a parking problem near the main shopping area which I would envisage will only get much worse if this fundamental point is overlooked.
