North's last Woolworths close their doors

Posted by The Journal on Jan 7, 09 11:00 AM in News

The last two Woolworths stores in the North East closed yesterday.

Shoppers could bag a cash desk for £5 and even the staff lockers for £2 at the stores in Market Street, Blyth, (pictured) and Station Road, Ashington.

Staff remained helpful and smiling until the end of the day when the doors were finally closed forever.

Mother of two Angela Rolt, 45, of Blyth, picked up a blue bath mat for 80p on the final day of clearance.

She said: "It has been here for a very long time so it's disappointing. I just feel sorry for the staff who have been working there for such a long time, there's no jobs going at the minute anywhere."

Shopper Jean Newell, 72, said: "I think it's a shame, I have known it all my life and I think
that it's awful that no-one stepped in to help them."

Around 27,000 people have been made redundant nationally following the closure of all 807 stores.
