The number of children at Ashington High getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C, including English and maths, went up from 33% in 2007 to 40% in 2008, while Hirst High's score went up from 22% to 29%.

Across Northumberland, the percentage of pupils gaining five or more A* to C including English and maths increased by 5%.

A County Council spokesperson said: "We are delighted with the students' performance across the county this year. Their achievement is due to their hard work, the high quality teaching they receive at school and the support they receive from their families."
