The play - by Billy Elliot author Lee Hall - which premiered at the re-opening of Live Theatre in Newcastle last year before heading to London, has won the Best Play category of the Evening Standard Awards in the capital.

At last week's ceremony at The Royal Opera House, actress Maureen Lipman presented the award to Hall who is also currently celebrating the Broadway success of Billy Elliot the Musical.

His story about Ashington's famous pitmen painters had been voted Performance of the Year in The Journal Culture Awards and recently won Best New Play at the national Theatrical Management Association awards in London.

It is currently running at the National Theatre there.

Meanwhile, work by the real-life Ashington Group hangs in Woodhorn museum near Ashington in Northumberland.

We'd like to hear from you.
