A direct bus service linking the Woodhorn Museum and Archives centre to Ashington town centre is being axed because of low passenger numbers.

The A6 service was launched to coincide with the opening of the revamped Woodhorn complex two years ago.

But despite visitor numbers to the attraction exceeding targets by 25%, the bus service has not been well used. Woodhorn director Keith merrin said subsidising the service can no longer be justified.

He added: "We will be making all our visitors aware of alternative public transport links, and using the money currently being spent on subsidising the service to ensure that Woodhorn remains one of the North East's most popular visitor attractions.''
