Northumberland urged to participate in council consultation

Posted by The Journal on Nov 26, 08 10:59 AM in Councils

People in Northumberland are being urged to have their say on executive decision-making arrangements for the county's new super-council which takes over in April.

Consultations on the issue close on Friday so residents are being reminded to comment before it is too late.

The new unitary authority could stick with the current county council arrangement, which sees its leader and executive appointed by all 67 existing councillors.

The alternative is to introduce a system of an elected mayor and executive, which would involve voters electing a mayor who then appoints at least two members to the executive.

Coun Andrew Tebbutt said: "The new council for Northumberland is 100% committed to delivering the best for our citizens. We can only do this if we have a proper understanding of their views, so I would urge them to have their say.''

We'd like to hear from you.
