Disorderly youths made to sign agreements

Disorderly youths in Ashington are being warned to behave or face joint action by police and the local authority.

Officers from the Ashington Neighbourhood Police Team are using Acceptable Behaviour Agreements (ABAs) in partnership with Wansbeck Council's Community Safety Team.

Over the past six weeks officers have issued 14 ABAs in the Ashington area following complaints of nuisance behaviour.

Officers from Wansbeck Council's enforcement team have been linking the orders to housing tenancy agreements, with the families of repeat offenders facing possible eviction.

Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Yeats said: "We are committed to improving the quality of life of local residents and have been identifying youths who have come to police attention three or more times in the past six months.

"Our aim is to direct youths away from disorderly behaviour which can escalate to involvement in crime.

"Youngsters need to understand that congregating on street corners in large groups can be intimidating, even if they aren't doing anything wrong."
