Big scores but Ashington lose out

There were some high-scoring games in the North Northumberland League, with some closer than others.

In Division One, Acklington Athletic lost 4-3 to Rothbury. Goalless at half time, the game came to life as Chris McGuilvery and Paul Christianson gave Acklington a two goal lead.

Adam Hall and Neil Johnson then netted for Rothbury to level the game but a second Christianson goal restored Acklington's lead. Rothbury hit back with two late goals from Craig Sutton to take the points.

Youths arrested over Ashington bag snatch

Two youths have been arrested after a woman had her purse snatched in broad daylight in a Northumberland town.

The incident happened as the 42-year-old victim walked along a lane between Station Road and Haldane Street in Ashington town centre at about 9.30am on Thursday.

She was approached from behind, and was knocked to the ground as her purse was snatched. The offenders made off on bicycles, leaving her shocked but not seriously hurt.

Retired headteacher and author Harry Dobson, of Morpeth, will give a talk on the architecture of Northumberland at the Woodhorn Museum and Archives Centre in Ashington on December 10, at 7.30pm.

The talk is free but places should be reserved by calling (01670) 528080.

People in Northumberland are getting good adult social care, according to a new national inspection.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has given Northumberland's adult services department a two-star rating, and says it has "excellent capacity" for improvement.

Money lessons for Ashington young mums

Young mothers in the Ashington area have been learning how to tighten their belts and boost their family finances at money management workshops.

Parents have been offered tips including how to cope with the cost of Christmas at Action for Children's Financial Futures workshops at centres in Ashington and Newbiggin.

The workshops, run by Action for Children staff and volunteers from Barclays Bank, are part of a £1.8m national partnership between the bank and the charity aimed at improving financial literacy and helping people to avoid debt.

Northumberland jam, African jewellery and American cookies were among the goods on offer at two internationally-themed markets staged during Enterprise Week.

All the items sold during the events in Bedlington last Friday and in Ashington on Saturday were produced by young people aged between five and 19, from 16 schools across the Wansbeck district.

Ashington cars seized in crackdown

Drivers without valid documents had to find their own way home after police seized 25 cars across Northumberland including 10 in Ashington.

Over a five-day roadside crime crackdown called Operation Magnitude, officers in Northumberland used a hi-tech Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to target cars and match number plates against a computer database.

Suspect vehicles were intercepted and in 25 cases were seized.

Christmas lights will be switched on across Wansbeck from this weekend.

The first will go on in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on Sunday night when churches combine for an Advent Sunday Carol Service in the Piazza from 6pm.

Newbiggin Salvation Army Band and the village middle school pupils will provide music and carols.

On Monday, Wansbeck Council and Bedlington Forum's Christmas lights display will be switched on for the first time and the following day the East Ashington Development Trust and Wansbeck Council will host an evening of activities that sees the lights switched on at 4.30pm.

People in Northumberland are being urged to have their say on executive decision-making arrangements for the county's new super-council which takes over in April.

Consultations on the issue close on Friday so residents are being reminded to comment before it is too late.

Teenage soccer star on mission to Africa

Teenage football ambassador Nick Storey will never forget the children he met on a mission to South Africa.

The 17-year-old from Northumberland jetted out to Cape Town as part of a team of four young leaders on a once-in-a-lifetime trip as part of the Football Association's Changing Lives programme in partnership with Coaching For Hope.

Nick, a midfielder with Ashington Football Club, had the job of coaching youngsters who played in their bare feet, some of them living on the streets in shanty towns.
