Play remembering Ashington miners could get national award
A hit play about Ashington miners is up for a prestigious award.
North East production The Pitmen Painters recalls the miners of Ashington who took up painting and captured the national imagination between the wars.
Lee Hall's play, commissioned by Live Theatre in Newcastle and premiered there last year, is one of three plays contesting the Best New Play category in the Theatrical Management Association's annual awards.
It has had two runs in Newcastle and one at the National Theatre in London, where it is to make a comeback in a larger auditorium in January 2009.
The award winners will be revealed in London on October 26.
