Police crackdown on drunkenness in Ashington

Posted by Graeme Whitfield on Sep 24, 08 09:08 AM in News

Northumbria Police is targeting under-age drinking and alcohol-related disorder in Ashington town centre in a bid to make Northumberland safer.

Following concern from local residents, neighbourhood policing teams have increased patrols on Friday and Saturday nights and during the last few weeks, officers have conducted more than 180 checks at off-licence premises.

Police also plan to visit Hirst and Ashington Parks, where underage drinking has led to disorderly behaviour in nearby residential areas.

Sgt Jon Bensley said: "Anti-social behaviour affects people's quality of life and is being addressed by the Ashington neighbourhood team.

"Every crime counts and we are determined to drive crime down further as part of our commitment to making Northumberland safer."

Police are also working with Wansbeck Council to identify those who repeatedly cause problems in the area.

Coun David Humble said: "Wansbeck District council and Wansbeck crime and disorder partnership work very closely with Northumbria Police in dealing with ongoing incidents of anti-social behaviour.

"In relation to this operation, we will be seeking to increase the use of acceptable behaviour agreements and other legislation."
